Starting with Raw

What is a raw food diet for pets?

A raw food diet for dogs involves feeding your pet a meal consisting of uncooked and unprocessed ingredients. Raw food diet for pets can include a variety of different ingredients, including raw meat (such as beef, chicken, or turkey), bones, organs (such as liver or kidney), and vegetables.

The idea behind this type of diet is that it mimics the natural diet of wild dogs, which typically eat prey animals and plants. Proponents of raw food diets believe that this type of diet is more natural and healthier for dogs than traditional kibble or canned dog food.

  • Supports healthy digestion, leading to smaller stools and less cleanup.
  • Strengthens the immune system for overall well-being.
  • Improves coat and skin health.
  • Helps maintain a healthy weight.
  • Supports dental health, helping maintain strong teeth and gums.
  • May reduce allergies and food sensitivities, promoting better overall healt

Dogs have a much higher tolerance for bacteria than humans. Think about all the times you’ve seen your dog sticking their nose in dirty things, drinking from puddles, or eating things off the ground!

Dogs have three key defenses that help them deal with harmful bacteria:

  1. Saliva that contains bacteria-fighting enzymes.
  2. Highly acidic gastric juices that break down bacteria in their stomach.
  3. A short digestive tract that quickly processes what they eat.

Remember that not all raw diets are created equal. Our Bold by Nature facility is USDA-licensed, and we only use USA, human-grade ingredients, certified humanely raised meats (GAP), and fresh, California organic vegetables (delivered fresh daily).

Feeding a Raw Food Diet

What is the best way to switch my pet to raw food?

Several methods exist for shifting your pet towards their raw food journey, each providing a unique approach for adapting your pet’s dietary habits.

Cold Turkey approach:  Switching your dog’s diet from kibble to raw food can be done immediately, provided your dog is in good health with no digestive problems. Keep a close watch on your dog’s weight and digestion during the transition. In the initial one to two weeks, it’s advised to stick to a single protein source. If there are no adverse digestive reactions, you can then introduce another protein source. The recommended rate for introducing new proteins is two per month. Starting with our ComplEat Turkey Dinner is a good option, given its lean composition and easy digestibility.

Slow and steady wins the race:  In the event that your canine companion has previously encountered digestive disturbances during a diet switch, our recommendation is to stretch the transition phase over a span of 5 to 10 days. Initiate the process by blending 75% of your dog’s existing diet with 25% of the new, raw food. Gradually adjust the mix to half-and-half, then 75% raw, eventually reaching 100% raw feed. This methodical approach can help mitigate potential digestive discomfort for your pet.

Opting for a raw diet for your canine companion requires careful consideration of their body weight. It is recommended to continually monitor and adjust their food intake based on changes in their weight. The quantity of raw food required varies depending on the life stage and seasonal feeding needs of your dog. The level of your dog’s physical activity also significantly influences the required food portion size. Planning a raw diet for your dog necessitates a comprehensive understanding of these factors to ensure their health and wellbeing.

Here’s a guide on how much raw food to feed your dog:

  • Average adult dogs- we recommend 2-2.5% of their ideal body weight.
  • Active adult dogs– we recommend 3% of their ideal body weight.
  • Underweight dogs– we recommend 3% of their ideal body weight.
  • Overweight dogs– we recommend 2% of their ideal body weight.
  • Senior dogs– we recommend 2% of their ideal weight.

When it comes to puppies, you will want to feed them 2-2.5% of their estimated adult weight.  Try these guidelines if you’re stuck:

  • 3 months or younger– 8% of their current weight.
  • 4-6 months–6% of their current weight.
  • 6-9 months–4% of their current weight.
  • 9+ months– 2.5% of their current weight.

**Always watch your dog’s body weight closely. We can provide feeding guidelines, but they are not an exact science as every dog has different individual needs.  If they’re losing or gaining weight you may need to adjust the amounts you feed. We also recommend talking to your holistic veterinarian if you have any questions.

While there is no one-size-fits-all answer to how often you should feed your dog, a general guideline based on their age is as follows:

  • Puppies (up to 6 months): 3-4 meals per day to support their growth and energy needs.
  • Adult dogs (6 months to 7 years): 1-2 meals per day. Many owners prefer twice a day for better digestion and to manage hunger.
  • Senior dogs (7 years and older): 1-2 meals per day, depending on their health and energy levels.

Always consult your veterinarian for personalized recommendations based on your dog’s specific needs!

No. Cooking raw food is not recommended due to their bone content and the potential alteration of nutrient values. Raw dog food is specifically designed to be safe and nutritious when fed raw, preserving optimal digestibility and appeal. The cooking process changes nutrient levels and food qualities on a cellular level, which is not beneficial for raw dog food. While raw bones safely provide essential nutrients, cooked bones can pose serious hazards.

This is a nutritional adequacy statement set out by AAFCO that means our food meets or exceeds their standards. AFFCO is not a certification, it is just guidelines.

Yes, you can! Here’s the scoop. Although we do believe that feeding only a raw food diet is best, it is safe to feed both raw food and kibble. We believe that some raw is better than no raw!

While most pets adapt easily to a raw food diet, some may experience challenges during the transition period. During the first 2 to 4 weeks of transitioning, pets may experience digestive upset, including gas, loose stools, and in rare cases, vomiting. This happens because the enzymes necessary for digesting high-quality protein in raw diets differ significantly from those needed for high-carbohydrate, processed foods. The body must adjust to producing the appropriate enzymes, and because raw food has a high moisture content (65%–75%), it requires less bile for digestion.

Yes, it is totally normal! Most of the food that your dog is ingesting is being digested and used properly by his body, resulting in less waste. In most cases, a raw food diet will result in firmer, more consistent stools within 24 hours of transitioningA raw dog food diet complements the canine digestive system, as the pH levels, gut flora, and short digestive tract are adapted to break down proteins and bones.

Although raw food may mimic the texture and scent of meat, it does not heighten predatory behavior; this behavior is unchanged by diet and instead stems from the dog’s original ancestry. One of the major benefits of raw food is its increased palatability, which makes it highly appealing and triggers greater interest in your pet. It’s essential to manage natural instincts through appropriate environmental enrichment and feeding practices to create a harmonious living environment with pets. Raw food itself is not the problem.

We fully understand the severity of food allergies and sensitivities, this is why we have very strict procedures when it comes to avoiding cross contamination. Typically, we only produce 1 protein per day. At the end of our production day, a sanitation crew comes in to clean the facility from top to bottom, including all machinery and equipment. Once the sanitation crew is complete, one of our supervisors comes in to inspect all the machinery before production. If we do produce 2 proteins in one day, all the machines are sanitized in between shifts, and the same procedures above are taken.

At Bold by Nature, our approach is to replicate the natural prey diet of dogs and cats. By utilizing a rotational feeding strategy, we ensure a well-rounded and balanced nutrient profile without the need for synthetic additives. The essential vitamins and minerals in our formulas come directly from our high-quality, natural ingredients.

Adding omega oils can further enhance your pet’s diet by providing additional health benefits. For this reason, we strongly recommend incorporating omega oils as a beneficial supplement.

We use goat milk as a functional ingredient, it enhances digestibility and is rich in protein. Goat milk serves as an excellent source of vitamin A, B, calcium and selenium, which help boost immunity.

Wheatgrass is the sprout of the wheat plant which has not yet produced any wheat therefore it is not yet considered wheat. Wheatgrass is a great functional ingredient responsible for providing 105 different vitamins and minerals

Our freeze tunnel rapidly freezes each patty within 8 minutes, preserving its integrity, consistency, and nutritional value. We are Canada’s only national raw pet food brand using this advanced technology.
